How to study

When I questioned the bible about the attitude appropriate to the study of science I found the following instructions.

Live to the glory of God

  • Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, do it for God and not for men. Col. 3:23.

Use your brains to the glory of God

  • I want to pray with the spirit, and I also want to pray with my mind. I want to sing psalms with the spirit, and I also want to sing psalms with my mind. 1 Cor. 14:15.

Be sincere and modest in your claims to know

  • If someone imagines he knows something - such a man has not yet realized how one ought to know. 1 Cor. 8:2.
  • Only love transcends our limitations. In contrast, our predictions can fail, our communication can fail, and our knowledge can fail. For our knowledge is patchwork, and our predictive power is limited. But when perfection comes, all patchwork will disappear. 1 Cor. 13:8-10.

But be perfect in your desire to understand

  • Don't be childlike in matters of understanding. Instead be childlike in matters of evil, but be perfect in understanding. 1 Cor. 14:20.

    Enjoy learning about God's creation

  • Great are the works of the Lord; all who research in them find pleasure therein (or: all who have pleasure in them want to understand them). Psalm 111:2.

    Aim for the best

  • Consider everything. Keep the good. Avoid evil whenever you notice it. 1 Thess. 5:21-22.

And take care not to lose contact with Jesus Christ

  • Make sure that no one traps you by philosophy and vain speculation based on man's teaching and the powers of the world instead of Christ. For through him you have everything in abundance. Col. 2:8.
